PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The large red letters atop the historic former Eastland Hotel returned to their rightful place on Wednesday and will soon shine bright as part of the city's skyline.

The hotel has been closed since 2011 while undergoing renovations and will reopen in December as the Westin Portland Harborview Hotel, but because the sign and building are historic landmarks, the Eastland name was returned to the rooftop.

Contractors used a massive crane to hoist the eight foot tall aluminum letters up to the roof where workers bolted them into place.

The letters are the originals, and were cleaned up and were retrofitted with LED lights instead of neon which should cut their electricity consumption by about 80%.

Crews will be back on site in the coming days to install another Eastland sign on the opposite side of the building.
