Epileptic dog clinical trial

SCARBOROUGH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Two local veterinarians are running a clinical trial to help dogs with epilepsy.

Nearly 780,000 dogs are diagnosed with epilepsy each year, making it one of the most common neurological disorders in dogs.

The Maine Veterinary Referral Center in Scarborough is one of the handful of selected communities in the country participating in an FDA study, and it is the only site in Maine.

Doctors are examining dogs with recurring seizures to see if they might be suffering from epilepsy.  If they qualify for the free trial, the doctors will administer a new drug, regulated by the FDA.

Doctors say even though it's a common condition, there is no known cause, and treatments are not always effective.
