SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - There has been an outpouring support for a kitten that was rescued after it was shown in a video being placed in a microwave oven.
The two 15-year-old girls from South Portland seen in that video are now facing animal cruelty charges.
The kitten, which has been renamed "Miracle", is now being cared for at a shelter where it's doing well. But workers at the Animal Refuge League say it's hard to tell what the long-term effects will be. People from as far away as Canada and England have called to inquire about adopting the cat. In fact, there's been so much interest, the Animal Refuge League will likely hold a lottery to see who gets to take the cat home.
"A lot of people are interested, obviously she's a beautiful kitten. We need to get her fat, so she's going to be going to foster care for a little while and then she's going to be spayed", said Lynne McGhee of the Animal Refuge League.
The posting of the video prompted dozens of calls to the South Portland Police Department. Police are now concerned about a potential backlash against the girls after reports of nasty messages being posted on social media. Police are urging people to let the process play out through the criminal justice system.
