New Hampshire man arrested in connection with fatal car crash

ROLLINSFORD, N.H. (NEWS CENTER) -- A New Hampshire man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of a Minnesota woman after a car crash Saturday in Rollinsford, N.H.

New Hampshire State Police said 43-year-old Matthew Tsopas from Somersworth, N.H. was arrested and charged with negligent homicide, felony driving under the influence of alcohol, and felony conduct after an accident.

Police were called to the scene of a serious car crash on Route 4 in Rollinsford Saturday around 4:30 p.m., according to a news release from New Hampshire State Police.  When police arrived on scene, they discovered the crash involved two cars and it happened at the intersection of Route 4 and Old Mill Road.  

Police said Tsopas was traveling west on Route 4 in the area of Old Mill Road when he drifted into the eastbound lane and struck a car coming in the other direction nearly head-on. Authorities said Tsopas then fled the scene but was located a short time later and taken to Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover where he was later arrested.

Officials said two people were in the car that Tsopas crashed into. The driver, who has been identified as 30-year-old Brian Preiss from St. Paul, Minn., was taken to Wentworth Douglas Hospital and then later transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.  

According to police, the passenger, who has been identified as 30-year-old Leah Fonda from St. Paul, Minn., died at the hospital from her injuries sustained in the crash.  

Police said speed and driver impairment are factors in the crash and it remains under investigation.
