PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Two cannons and their carriages from the USS Maine were removed by crane Tuesday from Fort Allen Park in Portland.

The park along the Eastern Promenade is actually going to undergo a rehabilitation project.

A handicap accessible overlook to Casco Bay will be added -- pedestrian and vehicular traffic will be separated -- and there will be more tree-lined walkways in the area.

The work is expected to be done by next October.

The cannons will be kept in storage until enough money is raised to restore each one.
