PARIS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - We're starting something new on the MORNING REPORT this month, Jackie is going "Around the World" in Maine! She starts off her reports in Paris, Maine.
A few places around Maine have claimed that former Vice President Hannibal Hamlin is from their town.
Paris is the true place where he's from, however. A beautiful home, called the Northlands Home, is where Hamlin was born on August 27, 1809.
He went on to have a very successful political career with his most distinguished title being Abraham Lincoln's Vice President during his second term.
Last week we visited Paris and Ben Conant, the town historian, gave us an elaborate tour of his hometown. He's stayed here the majority of life because of the rich historical background.
One fact about the confusion this town was originally built upon is one of Conant's favorite stories to tell.
He says: "I think one of the main reasons it was that we were originally given a grant from the French and Indian Wars, not the Revolutionary War. Originally they set aside land that was actually in New Hampshire. They didn't get the river straight. When so we found out that this land wasn't ours, or belonged to the grantees and granteurs, proprietors, that they revamped things and placed them in the right place."
We will be traveling all around the state to other "International" towns. If you have some suggestions and want to be a part of our stories e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
