PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a fatal fire in the city of Presque Isle.
The Presque Isle Fire Department said it was called to a mobile home fire at 14 Tompkins Road around 5:00 a.m. Sunday.
One person was found dead at the scene, and investigators believe the victim is 36-year-old Shawn Whitington, who lived at the home with his girlfriend and their four-year-old daughter.
Investigators said Whitington was the only person home at the time of the fire. His girlfriend, Tricia Ciccolella, discovered the fire when she returned home with friends around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Ciccolella and the others attempted to gain entry to the home, but were forced back by the smoke and fire.
Whitington had been out with the group earlier in the night, but had returned home around 1 a.m. His body was discovered by firefighters in his bedroom after the fire was put out.
The mobile home was destroyed in the fire.
Presque Isle was assisted by Caribou and Easton Fire Departments, and the flames took nearly a half hour to get under control.
There's no word yet on the cause of the fire.
The State Fire Marshal's Office is continuing the investigation.
