HAMPDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --It's been called "The Miracle Shot", also known as a three point buzzer beater thrown by freshman guard Nick Gilpin in last week's tournament that sealed Hampden Academy's fate. The ball went in, and in dramatic fashion Hampden beat Lawrence 40-39 to advance to the Boys Class A State Championship this weekend.
And even more dramatic? The person who passed him the ball before the game winning shot was his brother, Zach.
Now, the undefeated Hampden boys basketball team is preparing to take on the South Portland Red Riots. A pep rally was held in the Hampden Academy gym to get the school fired up for the big game.
But the school knows not to count their chickens too quickly. Just last year, Hampden found themselves in a similar position. They made it all the way to the gold ball game only to lose to the Deering Rams. But Zach says this year's team is different.
"The entire team, we have great chemistry," he said. "We all love practicing every day and spending a lot of time with each other... So I think if we just play our game, we have a good chance of winning, and we're excited and looking forward to it."
The Boys Class A State Championship game will be held at the Augusta Civic Center at 7:00 PM tomorrow night.
