LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There may have been dozens of dancers in a flash mob in Lewiston this afternoon, but the goal was to have one billion.

Part of the "One Billion Rising" campagin, the dances in Lewiston and Auburn Thursday were similar to flash mobs planned all over the world.

The goal of the campaign is to have one billion people dancing throughout the world to raise awareness about violence against women.

It is estimated that one billion women will be raped or beaten at some point in their lifetime.

"That's an atrocity," said Marty McIntyre, Executive Director of the Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Services.

"But one billion women rising up and dancing is a revolution," said McIntyre.

The SAPRS was one of several agencies that took part in the Lewiston/Auburn flash mobs.

There were also representatives from the Safe Voices, Center for Wisdom's WomenYWCA of Central Maine, United Somali Women of Maine, and Girl Power Fitness present.

"We're women from all walks of life, all ages, all ethnicities, religions," said Kathy Durgin-Leighton, Executive Director of the YWCA of Central Maine.

"It's really wonderful to see this collaboration, and we all have goosebumps because we're having such a lot of fun, and yet it's a really important subject."

The women danced in several locations throughout the day, including the atrium of the USM Lewiston/Auburn campus, the Lewiston Public Library and the Auburn Shaw's.
