PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- In its first year of business 18 years ago, Allagash produced 120 barrels, or 240 kegs, of its signature Belgian-style wheat beer, Allagash White.

Last year, 45,000 barrels of various Belgian-style beer were distributed.  Now in 2013, Rob Tod, the founder of Allagash Brewing Co., hopes at least 60,000 barrels will be delivered around the country.  Needless to say, business is going well.

Over the past seven years, Allagash has increased its production by 40% each year. Because of their success, they've outgrown their facility on Industrial Way in Portland and are expanding nearly every aspect of its building.  Tod credits his company's success to his staff, mostly.  Surrounding yourself with positive people who have the same goals and passion you do is critical for local businesses to thrive during this recession, he says.

"Beer drinkers in general are just continuing to discover craft beer and there are craft breweries popping up all over the country," Tod said. "It's very exciting. They're constantly being innovative, creating new styles, new experiences with beer, beer flavors, aromas, and that's really a huge driver for us here and a big part of our culture."

Right now Allagash employs around 50 people.  With this expansion, they hope to add 10 to 15 more.
