BRUNSWICK - Kaitlin Donahoe scored a game-high 20 points with nine assists and four steals to lead the Bowdoin College women's basketball team to a 66-35 win over Clarkson in the opening round of the 2012 Bowdoin Holiday Invitational Saturday at Morrell Gymnasium.
Kirsten Prue added 17 points, including five three-pointers, for the Polar Bears, who improve to 4-4 and will play in the championship game Sunday at 4:00 p.m. against Clark (Mass.). Ashley Loggins scored a team-best 19 points with 11 rebounds in 40 minutes of play for the Golden Knights, who will play in the third-place game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against Regis.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening ten minutes, with the visitors managing to hold an 8-2 advantage following a Loggins lay-in with 10:15 remaining in the first half. Keyed by consecutive three-pointers from Kaitlin Donahoe, Kirsten Prue and Megan Phelps, the Polar Bears warmed and went on a 21-4 run over the next seven minutes to take a 23-12 advantage with under three minutes left in the stanza. The Golden Knights were able to hold Bowdoin scoreless over the final three minutes and scored the final four points of the half to make it 23-16 at intermission.
Bowdoin put the contest out of reach early in the second half, opening the period on a 17-4 run, forcing ten points off of Golden Knight turnovers to take a 40-20 lead. The Polar Bears shot 47% from the field in the second half, extending their lead to 31 points at the final buzzer.
The Polar Bears held a 43-38 edge on the glass and held Clarkson to 27% shooting for the game. Bowdoin scored 20 points off of 26 Clarkson turnovers and had 17 bench points compared to just two for the visitors, who only had six players active for the game.
