This week's blog written by Bill Green:

December 8, 2012

It's hard to believe that it's December already. Where have the years gone? This is our 13th year on Bill Green's Maine. It's been lucky so far.

Our first segment tonight is on darts. I was surprised that 2600 Mainers are registered dart shooters. It's a convivial crowd that enjoys having a beer and competing at an ancient sport. Every society had its version of darts. Our game seems to have come from England where the early targets were slices of tree stumps. If you would like to know how you can take up the sport, click on the accompanying link.

Our interview this week is with Justin Alfond, the new President of the Maine Senate. Justin comes from one of Maine's leading families, being the grandson of Harold Alfond. Harold was an entrepreneur whose business interests began when he purchased Dexter Shoe. He built his enterprises to enormous size and along the way is credited with building the first factory outlet. Justin is the son of Billy Alfond. Justin jumped into politics at the age of 33 in 2008. He won a three-way Democratic primary in one of Maine's most liberal districts. In his third term in the Senate, he was voted its President. He intends to keep that position for four years until he is term limited out. For more news about Justin just click on the following link.

Earlier this week, I watched a juggler named Ziggy. He's good. If you're a juggler, as I am, you have to appreciate this guy's work. John Geyerhahn is a street performer and a lot of fun to watch. If you'd like to contact him, you can reach him through his Facebook page.!/Geyerhahn?fref=ts

Maine Huts and Trails continues to expand. They are now up to four huts and fifty miles of trails. Former Olympian Nicole Friedman is the new Executive Director of the system. They are opening the Stratton Brook Hut on December 12, 2012 at 10 AM. Nicole hopes to make the system self-sustaining in the next couple of years. Huts and Trails may someday rival the Appalachian Trail and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in terms of the number of outdoor enthusiasts that it attracts.
