WINDHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Police in Windham are investigating an unusual and brazen crime. It involves a man pretending to be law enforcement officer who scammed another man out of money.
Police are looking for the man in the back of the attached image. The photo was taken at a bank ATM. The man in the foreground with his face covered is the victim. Police say the suspect went to the victim's home last week pretending to be an undercover Cumberland County Sheriff's officer.
He said he was there to arrest him on a civil violation, but if the victim gave him money he wouldn't. The victim then drove the man to an ATM machine at a bank in North Windham, withdrew money and gave it to the suspect.
Police believe the victim was specifically targeted in this case. They are now asking for your help. If you recognize the suspect in this case you are asked to call the Windham Police Department at 207-415-0403.
If apprehended the suspect faces charges of impersonating an officer and theft by deception.
