(NEWS CENTER) - The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans ended one streak last week at Bolous Stadium, by beating the Cheverus Stags in the Class A Western Maine Championship Game and stopping their 34 game winning streak. This week, Coack Kevin Kezal's Trojans looked to erase a state championship drought that has lasted since 1988. Well Kezal's squard did just that, defeating the Lawrence Bulldogs 37-23 at Fitzpatrick Stadium Saturday.
All did not start rosey for the Trojans as the Bulldogs Jake Doolan returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to start things with a bang. Thornton wasted no time in answering with an 11 play drive, culminating in a 7 yrd Nick Kenney TD.
The teams went back and forth all day until Thornton Academy gained the advantage by scoring 14 points in a little over 1 minute in the 3rd quarter. Thornton Academy standout junior Andrew Libby scored 2 touchdowns, including a spectacular 48 yrd punt return.
The Lawrence Bulldogs play strong all day long led by QB and defensive back Spencer Carey. Carey threw a beauty 30 yrd TD pass to Lefrance in the 2nd quarter. Lawrence play was also highligted by a spectacular up the guy 54 yard TD scamper by Josh Doolan in the 4th quarter.
This was Thornton Academy's 1st title since 1988 and Lawrence returned to Gold Ball Saturday after last seasons defeat at the hands of the Cheverus Stags.
