WATERVILLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A non-profit in central Maine is raising money to make sure no one goes hungry on Thanksgiving.

The Kennebec Valley Community Action Program held a Turkey Round-Up on Saturday. The non-profit says area food banks usually buy turkeys at a highly discounted rate from charitable distributors. But this year, federal cutbacks and reduced donations are preventing the distributors from offering those discounts. That means local food banks and food pantries will need to buy turkeys at full price. Food bank coordinator Wanda Stewarnd says the food banks don't have the money to do that.

"They're going to get less and less from the food banks because there's less coming in," Stewarnd said. "The ones that do contribute to food banks, food cost more. It costs more to ship it, so even if the funding stays the same there's less available."
