Homeowners giving up on grass

(NBC) - As lush as your lawn may look right now, chances are it'll be in danger of going brown a few months from now.

Forecasters fear this will be another summer where more than half the country will be dried up by drought.

That's why more and more homeowners are giving up on grass.

"In the hot weather your lawn is just going south, it's going dormant, it's brown, it's not good, and there's nothing you can do about it," says Consumer Report's Peter Sawchuk.

Nothing but dig it up and replace it with what landscape architects call "zeroscaping".

There are plenty of alternatives, like planting more drought-resistant plants and making more of your yard natural areas.

In some parts of the country, they're even replacing bushes and shrubs with ones that require less water.
