PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Earlier this week we told you about the proposed changes to Instagram's terms of service.
We reported that the company said it would change the language based on the volume of feedback from users. Thursday night, they did.

Monday they announced the new plan and received a lot of angry feedback from users. Tuesday they said they would work on making the language more clear, and last night they did.

-Earlier in the week the proposed terms basically said that your content, or rather, your photos, we're available for them to do (basically) whatever they wanted, royalty free. This led many to believe that Instagram could use your photos for advertising. While they tired to stress that wasn't the case, only Thursday night did the new wording come out.

They wrote in a blog post:

"Because of the feedback we have heard from you, we are reverting this advertising section to the original version that has been in effect since we launched the service in October 2010."

In other words, how it was before Monday's proposal.

They also gave us a little look into their thinking. Some thought, at the time they had not fully thought out their advertising plan -- other than they needed one.

Last night they said this about future advertising:

"Going forward, rather than obtain permission from you to introduce possible advertising products we have not yet developed, we are going to take the time to complete our plans, and then come back to our users and explain how we would like for our advertising business to work."

Now Instagram is owned by Facebook, and on the heels of this Facebook announced some changes too.  They too are updating their privacy controls. They are rolling out "Privacy Shortcuts" under a little lock icon on the right hand side of your screen at the top of the page. The language here is meant to be written in a way that anyone can understand what is going on.

-They've also starting given people the option to be tagged in a post or a photo. So if I tag a friend in something, they now have the option for the tag to happen or not.

-They hope to include more of this "Plain English" across the rest of the site too. The goal is to have these changes finished up by they end of today.

And finally YouTube has hit a major milestone.  The first official video to hit 1 BILLLION views was PSY- Gangnum Style.

It happened around 11am today and this is a pretty big deal for the folks at YouTube and an impressive way to end the year 2012 - the most social year on record.
