Livingstone was born on Mar. 19, 1813.  He was a Scottish missionary who dedicated his life to exploring Africa.  Livingstone was the first European to see many of the continent's greatest natural wonders.

Before he renamed the falls, it was known in the native language as "the smoke that thunders."
