Roosevelt delivered his first chat about a week after taking office on Mar. 12, 1933, amid the darkest days of the Great Depression.

His plan was to close all banks across the country for one day to give panicked investors a chance to calm down before pulling out all of their money.

By reaching out over the radio, Roosevelt discovered he could connect with the public unlike any president ever before.  He gave 30 chats between 1933 and 1944.
