Diamond was born on Jan. 24, 1941.

He forfeited his scholarship and left college before graduating to chase his dream of becoming a musician.   NYU eventually gave him an honorary degree in 2003.

In recent years, baseball has become the sport to which Diamond is most commonly associated because of the tradition of playing his hit song "Sweet Caroline" during Red Sox games at Fenway Park.
