McCain was born on Aug. 29, 1936.
His father was a naval officer. When he was sent abroad, his wife went with him even though she was pregnant.
From the very first day of his life, the Navy was in McCain's blood. Like his father, he entered the naval academy and became a pilot. His plane was shot down on a mission in Vietnam and he spent five years as a prisoner of war. After being released, he retired as a captain with a chest full of medals including the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross to name just a few.
