The Empire State Building opened to the public on May 1, 1931.

The spire on top of the building which now serves mostly a decorative function was originally designed as a mooring mast.  But it never really panned out the way the architects envisioned.

Only a few dirigibles ever attempted to dock there because of the dangerous updrafts caused by the flow of air currents along the side of the building.
