NORTH TURNER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There was a special celebration of freedom in North Turner today. The Union Presbyterian Church retired its American Flag after 50 years.
Members of the American Legion Turner, Post 111, performed the ceremony to honor and remove the old flag. They also performed a full gun salute.
According to one of the members of the church, the new American flag was purchased in Boston and had been flown over the U.S.S Constitution.
Today's ceremony is particularly important to the church, said Rev. Lissa Bradford.
"For a community that has come together so many times in the last year to pray and grieve over tragedies that have happened in out country. We are so excited to be able to come together today to celebrate in a happy time. And to be able to honor and celebrate our freedom. We don't take that for granted."
The North Turner Presbyterian Church has held candlelight and prayer vigils for victims in Newtown and Boston.
