PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - All four members of Maine's congressional delegation have introduced bills to make the Department of Defense buy only American-made athletic footwear for military personnel.

Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King last week introduced a bill in the Senate they say would require the military to buy American, while U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree did the same in the House of Representatives.

The Defense Department as a rule purchases shoes and clothing that are made in America. The department used to treat athletic footwear the same way, but in recent years it's been giving incoming recruits cash allowances to buy their own footwear.

Michaud says making the military buy U.S.-made athletic footwear could help companies like New Balance that employ hundreds of Mainers in Norway, Norridgewock and Skowhegan.
