ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Night Sky will be a lot easier to see from Orono, thanks to a major investment at the University of Maine. With the scoop of a shovel, officials broke ground on a new $5.2 million astronomy center on the UMaine Campus. The new facility will house a research telescope, planetarium, and observatory. It will be the largest such facility in Maine. Most of the project is being paid for through donations. An anonymous donor put up $3.2 million and Emera, the parent company of Bangor Hydro donated $1 million for the naming rights. The new facility will be called the Emera Astronomy Center and will become the future home for the Maynard F. Jordan Planetarium. Construction is expected to be complete in time for the summer of 2014.
