GORHAM, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The winners of the Zero Waste Challenge were announced on Monday -- and changes these kids have made will last for years to come.

Kids at Gorham Middle School earned it by rolling up their sleeves and digging through the trash.

You can't get your school -- which serves hundreds of meals every day -- to zero waste... without understanding what it is you are throwing away.

To do it, they had to get everyone involved. They taught fellow students what can be recycled.

But recycling alone won't get you to zero waste. So the students started to compost and they set up a junk swap.

...and it all helped.

Gorham Middle School is not at Zero Waste yet, but it is well on the way thanks to some very caring students who learned that sometimes you have to get your hands dirty to make a difference.
