LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - State Police have charged 23-year-old Michael McNaughton, of Lewiston, with the murder of 20-year-old Romeo Parent.
During a press conference police belive the motive appears to be that Romeo Parent was providing information to the police about a crime that was going on in the Lewiston/Auburn area.
State Police said Friday afternoon that they recovered the Parent's body in Monmouth at Jug Stream, just below the dam that separates Annabessacook and Cobbossee lakes.
The body was found in less than 10 feet of water by police dogs. Members of the department's dive team aided the recovery of the body.
Parent's body was transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Augusta for an autopsy on Saturday.
Detectives think Parent was killed in Greene late Tuesday afternoon and his body was dumped into the stream in Monmouth, along Route 135 on Wednesday.
Police say that Parent was a transient who lived in the Lewiston and Auburn area and the two did know one another. They say the murder took place at some point earlier in the week.
Michael McNaughton is currently being held at the Androscoggin County Jail and his first appearance in court will be Tuesday.
