BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Students from across Maine came together today to put their poetry recital skills to the test.

Ten contestants from all over the state competed in the Poetry Out Loud competition held at Gracie Theater on the Husson University campus today. Contestants chose three of their favorite poems, memorized them, and recited them in front of a live audience. The students were judged on their accuracy and delivery.

Special Guest Richard Blanco kicked off the night by reading some of his original poetry for the contestants and their parents. Blanco was the poet that was chosen to write an original poem for President Obama's last inauguration ceremony.

The winner of the event was Dyer Rhaods of Waynflete School. He received $200, and an all expenses paid trip to the national finals in Washington, D.C. in April. His high school also received $500 for new poetry books.
