Looking for signs of spring on the last day of winter

WALDOBORO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Coming when it did - one day before the calendar marks the start of Spring - this snowstorm has been more of a pain than the actual accumulation would suggest. After all, we've already endured a series of storms during mid-and-late winter, including that Blizzard.

But that calendar can be a fickle document, especially when it comes to the First Day of Spring. NEWS CENTER'S Kevin Mannix likes to remind us that April can be a winter month, and that March, regardless of what a piece of paper says, certainly belongs to the cold season.

However, if you know where to look, Spring doesn't seem far off. At the Moose Crossing Garden Center in Waldoboro, they have a dozen greenhouses full of green and growing plants. Pansies, geraniums, Super Bells and supertunias, to name just a few, are growing by the thousands. Owners Tyler and Jeremy Lupien (whose parents started the business 42 years ago) say some people might pay money just to see something green this time of year. And they both admit it feels good to see plants growing while there's snow outside.

Does this late season storm portend anything particular as far as the coming of Spring? Tyler Lupien says no. ? "This is Maine," he says."The only thing I would say is this kind of weather gets people ready psychologically for what we have to offer...for a little color, a little green and a little brightness."

And for most Mainers, it can't come soon enough.
