JAY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that destroyed an apartment building in Jay Saturday afternoon.
Jay Assistant Fire Chief Mike Booker said crews were first called to the three-story apartment building on 39 Church Street around 12:30 p.m.
Eight people were home at the time the fire started, but Booker said they all made it out safely and no one was injured.
The fire caused extensive damage, and the building is considered a total loss.
Jay was assisted by Livermore, Livermore Falls, Wilton, East Dixfield, and Farmington fire departments on scene, and it took just under two hours to get the fire under control.
There's no word yet on the cause. The State Fire Marshal's office has been called in to investigate.
Asst. Chief Booker said the Red Cross has also been called in to assist people who were left homeless by the fire.
