AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Legislature and the Governor have provided some breathing room for themselves and for people with concealed weapons permits.

Last week, a newspaper filed a Freedom of Access Act request to get the list of all CW permit holders. That led to angry protests from some permit holders, and Legislators decided they had to act.

Tuesday the state Senate and the House passed an emergency bill, prepared by the Governor, which will temporarily block release of those names

The bill expires April 30, and leaders in both parties say that will provide time for the Legislature to consider a bill that would permanently block public access to those names.

The sponsor of the bill, Rep. Corey Wilson (R-Augusta) tells NEWS CENTER the public uproar over the issue last week shows why his bill is needed.

But some Democratic leaders say there are a number of people who are concerned about restricting public access to government records, and the issue will likely face intense debate at public hearing, and then when it comes up in the full Legislature.
