PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The Portland Water District has issued a boil order for the Portland peninsula.

PWD describes the area affected as the Portland peninsula east of Interstate 295.

The water main break is at 128 Somerset Street between Elm Street and Preble Street near Kennebec Street.

At least two Portland schools are closed -- including the East End School and Reiche School.

The PWD says the boil order is in effect as of 9:30am Wednesday.

Customers are directed to boil consumable water for at least five minutes before drinking, making ice cubes, washing food, brushing teeth or in any other activity involving consumption of water.

The PWD says the order will remain in effect until further notice.

Samples are being collected Wednesday morning and results will be available within 24 hours.

As of 8:45am on Thursday morning, the boil order was lifted.
