AUBURN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Students at Edward Little High School in Auburn are creating a friendly competition and helping the community through the annual Coats & Toys For Kids campaign.

For the first time, ELHS will host a school-wide coat drive for the month of December and donate all of the coats to the Salvation Army.

ELHS Assistant Principal Steve Galway said the students already do a number of community service projects and drives throughout the year, but they wanted to do more.

"And someone suggested we do Coats For Kids...and everyone's getting excited," said Galway.

Student mentor groups will be competing against each other, and the group that collects the most kids will receive an ice cream party.

Representatives from BJ's Wholesale Club and members of the military were at a school assembly Wednesday afternoon to kick off the coat drive.

Galway said the school puts an emphasis on community service to teach lessons that go beyond the classroom.

"It's a life lesson, that it's great to give," he said.

"The more you give the more you get, and I think the kids have really bought in to that."

Donations will also be accepted at any Shaw's or Hannaford location in the state. New or gently used coats will be accepted until the end of the month, and new, unwrapped toys will be accepted until December 16.
