LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Bates College is preparing to inaugurate its eighth president.

Clayton Spencer took office on July 1 but the formal inauguration is being held Friday in Merrill Gymnasium. The college expects as many as 2,500 members of the Bates community and invited guests to attend. Also on hand will be delegates from more than 70 other colleges and institutions.

The event, which starts at 2:30 p.m., will be full of pomp, with a colorful procession of faculty, administrators, students and delegates led by a bagpiper.

Michael Bonney, chairman of the trustees, will conduct the installation and present historical items, including the presidential collar, a record book and a set of keys.
