FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Tipping is important at Christmas time in Maine.  That's because tipping is the process of collecting greens that are used in the making of Christmas wreaths, kissing balls and garlands.

Jeff Skillin is one of the owners of Skillins' Greenhouses in Falmouth and is something of an expert. He says to get land owner permission and simply clip healthy branch tips.  He likes to use Balsam Fur and mix in a little White Pine.

"I always look for good, colorful, healthy branches," he told NEWS CENTER.) "The Balsam will give it that Christmas aroma."

The pros go tipping from about Halloween into early December. They collect tips for various rates.  Sometimes a tipper pays the land owner a set amount of up to ten cents a pound and can receive anywhere from twenty to thirty two cents a pound for the tips they gather.

Tips are gathered in bundles of about twenty-five pounds.
