ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The University of Maine Orono has a new president.
Paul Ferguson took office officially one week ago as the university's 19th president. Ferguson comes from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where he served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.
President Ferguson said he has already started discussions with faculty, staff and students about the future of the flagship campus.
"We can be a strong contributer to research and economic development," he said. "That's our role: To help the state of Maine and New England prosper. We want to figure out the best way to serve our students to reach their goals and it all has to be in a framework of financial sustainability. "
Ferguson moved into the president's home on campus this week with his wife, Grace, and daughter, Jenny, who will be a sophomore at UMaine in the fall.
