FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A long time gun range has been closed temporarily until safety improvements to the property are made.

Members of the the Falmouth Rod and Gun Club voluntarily closed the 12 acre range after code enforcement and police officials found safety concerns.

Police took a closer look at the property after receiving a number of complaints from nearby residents. Authorities discovered that the range which was built by the U.S. military in the late 1940's had been operating without a permit since 1995.

"It fell through the cracks," said Falmouth Police Chief Edward Tolan. "They changed their membership, I don't think it was intentional what they did. I think people didn't realize it had to be renewed every year, to be honest with you we felt it was grandfathered."

Police officials say the rifle range need to be reconfigured to avoid any down range accidents and larger burms needed to be constructed between the range and private property in the area. If the improvements are made, the club could receive new permits and re-open the range.
