ELLSWORTH (NEWS CENTER) -- Teachers across the state encouraged students to skip the bus Wednesday morning.

Instead of getting a ride to class students took a few steps toward a healthier life style.

Today is international walk to school day and nearly five hundred students at Ellsworth middle school kicked the bus to the curb.

Parents and buses dropped off students at check points where teachers walked with them over a mile to get to school.

More than 150 schools in Maine have participated in this day of walking since the program started in 2001. This is the third year for Ellsworth Middle School.

Officials at Ellsworth Middle School say they plan to do the walk to school again in the fall when the weather is good.
