PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Ephriam Bennett has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for a violent home invasion in Standish in early 2009.

Bennett went before a judge Wednesday morning to receive his sentence.

In October, he pleaded guilty to charges of elevated aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, kidnapping, and criminal threatening.

Police say he broke into the home of Richard Carlson in February of last year while Carlson was sleeping.

They say Bennett kicked and stabbed Carlson, then tied him up with duct tape.

Bennett claimed he went to Carlson's house to ask for money and Carlson invited him him.

At first, he claimed he was defending himself after Carlson took a swing at him.

Wednesday morning a judge sentenced Bennett to 27 years in prison with 6 years suspended.
