BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- In Maine, the synthetic drug bath salts first became a problem in Bangor and since then has spread to other communities.

Ron Gastia, Bangor's Chief of Police, will head to Portland Thursday to talk with federal officials from the office of National Drug Control Policy. Congressman Mike Michaud invited those officials to Maine to hear first hand accounts about the increasing abuse of bath salts.

"It's important for Maine law enforcement officials to tell Director Tucker whats happening here in Maine, said Michaud (D-2nd District, Maine). I know the Bangor Chief of Police will be down there tomorrow at that meeting to talk about it in more details so it should be an very informative meeting that we'll be having and looking forward to that discussion."

The meeting will be held at the U.S. Attorneys office in Portland. Michaud is also sponsoring a bill that would ban bath salts.
