BRYANT POND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Winter time can mean old fashioned fun.  Perhaps no one is having more of it than Phil Smith who is refurbishing a 1914 Aero Sled, which looks like an air boat on skis.

The sled was designed to go 60 mph. It is powered by a five horse power engine which spins a big propeller.  The propeller is mounted just a couple feet behind the head of the driver and is not encased in a cage.

Smith bought it from a rich old lady near Philadelphia back in the 1970's.  He said he paid her $22.50 which was "all the money I had in my pocket, plus a 24-hour day of work." He promised he would get the sled running.

"I don't know anything at all, but I'm the authority," Smith told NEWS CENTER.  He believes he got the sled up to seventy miles per hour last week.  "I was as scared as I've ever been in my life!" he said.

Smith is looking for someone who has knowledge about these great old sleds.  He's looking for advice and also spark plugs. "The spark plugs for this are really broken inside and you can take them apart in about eight pieces and you can dry them out and take the mica off and put them back in and they run for a little while."

Anyone who would like to contact Phil Smith, can do so by emailing Bill Green at
