MONDAY'S PICKS:

Frozen - DVD or Blu-ray
Disney's excellent animated feature starring the voices of Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel just won Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. It is the story of two princesses, one of whom has magical powers. We promise to pronounce Idina Menzel's name correctly.

American Hustle - DVD or Blu-ray
Here is another critically acclaimed movie from last year. It was nominated for 10 Oscars but didn't win any. American Hustle is a crime film set in the 1970s with a lot of humor in it. Amy Adams and Christian Bale are two con artists who are caught and forced to help an FBI agent who goes kind of rogue. A fake sheikh and the New Jersey mob eventually are involved.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom DVD, Blu-ray
Here is another Oscar-nominated film, although the only nomination this film received was for the U2 song in the credits. The film covers 52 years if Mandela's life as taken from Mandela's autobiography. The producer was friends with Mandela and tried to use authentic locations as much as possible. Even with a 2 ½ hour running time, some viewers might wish that he had been able to take a little more time with some events in Mandela's life. Even so, it's a film everyone should watch.

Return to Nuke 'Em High Vol. 1  - DVD or Blu-ray
This is a low-budget sci-fi horror comedy. It is sequel to the 80s movie Class of Nuke 'Em High. The local nuclear power plant has been bulldozed to make an organic food factory. People who eat the food from the factory, including the school glee club, are mutated. Two girls from the high school are the good guys. File under "intentionally so bad it's hopefully good." People who are into this stuff love this movie.

Skrillex - Recess CD
Skrillex was the first electronic dance musician since Moby to become somewhat widely known. Recess is his first major release since he hit it big with Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites two years ago. His music is pretty weird for a lot of people, so his challenge is to hope that the guest stars on this CD help him have a strong single or two. Then he will get really big; otherwise, he will be "only" an "important" artist who brought a new sound into pop music.
