RUMFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Black Mountain and the Chisholm Ski Club hosted the U. S. National Cross Country ski races last week.  America's best were treated with a world class venue and support thanks to volunteers.

"You can't beat the spirit of our amazing volunteers," said Chummy Broomhall, a two-time Olympian for whom the stadium in Rumford is named. At 91, Broomhall is Maine's oldest Olympian.

His spirit still pervades the area, which has hosted the National Championships five times and will again in 2012.

The volunteers have great camaraderie. About one hundred turn out to prepare and maintain the course, administer the race and do the dozens of other chores that are necessary to put on such an event.
