Donna Allen is one of the founding volunteers and, according to her volunteer staff, the "cornerstone" of Neighbor's Cupboard, the food pantry and emergency assistance organization serving Winterport and Frankfort.
Since 1987, the mission of Neighbor's Cupboard is to provide food, serving an average of 35 families per week, but Donna does much more. With warmth and without judgment, Donna connects people with resources: emergency money for heat, jobs, baby supplies for new mothers in need, school supplies for children and adult learners and much more. She makes deliveries to people who are unable to come to the Cupboard, and is available around the clock to meet emergency needs.
In 2011 the Winterport Apostolic Church, which housed the Cupboard, burned to the ground. Within three weeks, Donna and a team of volunteers had the Cupboard up-andrunning in a new space. Donna makes a difference for the clients who benefit from her compassion, but through patience and encouragement, she also inspires the other volunteers.
Kristen Hallett says that Donna "makes each of us feel that we are capable of much more than we might have thought."
