BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The annual Penobscot Reads program is happening all during the month of January at area public libraries.

The program encourages people in the area to read the same book at the same time and features different activities related to the book at area libraries.  This year's book is "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.

Here's a synopsis of the book according to the Bangor Public Library website:  "In 1993 Greg Mortenson, ill and weary after a failed attempt to climb K2, wandered into an impoverished Pakistani village. Moved by the villagers' kindness to him, he promised to return and build a school. This book is a chronicle of the remarkable outcome of that promise. Over the next decade, Mortenson and his supporters have built 130 schools.  Three Cups of Tea is a riveting tale of what one determined person can do."
