PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Warm temperatures and spurts of summer-like weather have already brought many people out on their bikes,  but when you do dust off the bike for the first time, safety experts say there's an important checklist you need to go through.

Kris Clark is the manager at Back Bay Bicycle in Portland.  He says before heading out for the first time on your bike, it's a good idea to check your tire pressure, brakes, and conduct a gear check.  He says making sure your helmet fits properly is also extremely important, and to get a new helmet if you've had the same one for more than five years.

Clark also says that while out on your bike, often expecting and preparing for the worst is also a good strategy.

"Constantly be watching traffic and cars, not only for parked cars and opening doors but any car that's coming up behind you," Clark said.  "I always assume that they may not see me, so if they pull a right turn in front of you, you are already ready to brake."

Clark also says to be aware that bikes must obey the same rules of the road that cars do, and to use hand signals when turning or slowing down.
