Dentists say tooth decay can complicate other health issues like heart disease and diabetes. But people who are uninsured or in MaineCare can have a hard time getting into a Dentist's office. Community Dental is one non-profit group that does accept MaineCare, in fact 70% of it's patients use the program. In all there are 6 Community Dental Centers in Maine. The latest Maine Kids Count Report shows 46% of Maine Families do not have enough Money to cover basic needs like food, housing and health care. Dr. James Schmidt says it's time the mouth is once again considered part of the body. He says it needs to be maintained for overall health and that maintenance must start at a young age. MaineCare is only available to people under age 21. Therefore a large majority of patients at Community Dental are children. The Department of Health and Human Services says there are more than 400 Dentists in Maine who accept MaineCare. They say it's a number that grows every year.
